Kuruppu was part and parcel in his ODI group following the success of the World Cup, but did not get a regular wicket-keeper until the year 1986 and he was given his chance to play in the Asia Cup tournament against Pakistan and Bangladesh that Sri Lanka won. He scored a number of scores that were low but still did well.

Kuruppu is the current coach of the Maldives national cricket team. In November 2018, he was named on Sri Lanka Cricket’s National Selection Panel.

The following year, Kuruppu got his Test debut against New Zealand at Colombo Cricket Club Ground He was picked to replace Guy de Alwis, whose inexplicably poor performance in the field had given the selectors some consideration. In a match that was often interrupted due to rain and also against famous bowlers such as Richard Hadlee and Ewen Chatfield, Kuruppu made his maiden first-class century on the second day. Sidath Wettimuny held the Sri Lankan record for the most successful Test-specific innings after having scored 191 in a match against England in 1984. Kuruppu was able to surpass the record by 11 runs, achieving the score 201 not out in 777 minutes , becoming one of the very first Sri Lankan to hit a double century in a Test match. Six players have since repeated the feat.

Don Sardha Brendon Priyantha Kuruppu (born 5 January 1962) is an ex- Sri Lankan wicket-keeper and opening batsman. He often was a part of ODIs, and the year 1983 saw him playing 54 games to 1990. However, his Test career was mostly insignificant, except for one notable innings in Colombo which was 201 in the making to become the first century in a Test and a his double century in his debut game in Sri Lanka.

His international career began in 1983 at the World Cup in England, which he scored seven fours and two sixes in what would be the best score of his career, a record-setting 72-run victory against Pakistan. Sri Lanka lost by 50 runs. The subsequent three games were disappointing because the team was unable to win all three and he was unable to surpass 30. But, in Derby in the match against New Zealand he found form again, scoring 62 and establishing an 182-run chase when Sri Lanka won by three wickets, their only victory in the tournament.

The two teams agreed to cancel the rest of the series owing to security fears, following a bomb blast near the New Zealand team’s hotel. However, the double century cemented his place in the selectors’ minds, and by the end of the three-team World Series tournament in January 1988, he was a regular fixture in the ODI side. However, he failed to back that up with the bat, and after a disastrous Nehru Cup in October 1989, where he strung together 36 runs in five innings and Sri Lanka finished last out of the sixth teams, Kuruppu was shuffled out of the team and Hashan Tillakaratne took his place behind the stumps. He was given one last chance as opener in 1991 when Sri Lanka travelled to England for a Test, but Sri Lanka lost by 137 runs and Kuruppu only made scores of 5 and 21. That was his last international game, but Kuruppu went on to work within Sri Lankan cricket, and he was made interim team manager for the tours of Pakistan and New Zealand in the late months of 2004.
