Whitecross began his football career in his club Kedron Districts Junior Football Club in Brisbane, Queensland playing there for 11 seasons, before going to join the Zillmere Eagles to begin his career as a senior player. Whitecross represented Queensland in the under 12s (2002) and in under 16s (2005-2006) as captain of his team from 2006 as well as in the under 18s in 2007. He was invited to an AIS/AFL Academy and travelled with the Australian under 17 team to South Africa in 2007.
Picked by Hawthorn as their second round draft selection in 2007. Whitecross was a full year in the VFL learning his trade in conjunction with Hawthorn partner Box Hill.
Whitecross ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee against Collingwood in the 2012 qualifying final, requiring a reconstruction.
