Fernandes is a native of Nairobi in Kenya in 1979. the parents of his were Goan descent. The family relocated to Canada when the age of nine and he attended the school of Newmarket, Ontario.

In 2017 , at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles Fernandes presented Free Fall 49, a performance that focused on the massacre that took place in 2016 in The Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. The show was choreographed that was performed by eight dancers composed over the course of the course of two hours. The music was composed by Tom Krell of How to Dress Well. The music samples were interspersed with short intervals that evoked the gunfire’s thump The beat cut through the rhythm 49 times, causing the dancers to first fall to the ground and then rising in moments of commemoration and resurrection. This piece of performance art was then presented at the Kogod Courtyward at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in June of 2019.

As of 2011, Fernandes has been included within Found in Translation, exhibition at The Solomon R Guggenheim Museum, New York.

Brendan Fernandes (born 1979) is a Canadian contemporary artist from Canada. He is a specialist in visual and installation art. He is currently an instructor of Northwestern University teaching art theory and practice.

Fernandes was professionally trained as a ballet dancer and would also bind his feet to improve his technique. He injured his hamstring in his senior year of college, ending his dancing career. He continued to train in the field of visual art. He obtained his bachelor of Fine Arts degree at York University in Toronto, followed by the Master of Fine Arts at the University of Western Ontario, located in London, Ontario. In 2006 the artist took part in the Independent Study Program of the Whitney Museum of American Art in Manhattan, New York.

Fernandes exhibited an installation and series of events at The Graham Foundation titled The Master and Form, in 2018. The series explored mastery and discipline within the culture of ballet through the use of designed objects that enable dancers to perfect and extend iconic positions. This work was featured in the 2019 Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art
