Her career began officially in 1994, as an assistant coach with Kent State and Iowa State and she then served for three years as the head coach of Ball State and Minnesota. In her initial game of coaching as a coach Frese played Ball State to an upset victory against Minnesota. Two days later Minnesota appointed Frese to be their head coach. In her 2001-02 season at Minnesota she coached an eight-year span of improvement from 8-20 to 22, which was one of the most significant ever recorded in NCAA history. Minnesota reached the second stage of the NCAA Championship that year, and Frese was named the AP National Coach of the Year for 2002. Minnesota’s fans grew quickly which allowed the program take the decision to begin playing games in the same venue with the team for men. After transforming this Minnesota team, Frese became a sought for coach and attracted attention from Maryland, Ohio State and Florida. Maryland athletic director Debbie Yow sealed the deal in the evening at the Men’s NCAA Basketball Championship game, during which Maryland beat Indiana to win the national championship.

Brenda Frese is the daughter of Bill and Donna Frese. There are five of her siblings: Deb, Cindy, Marsha, Stacy, and Jeff. She was a student at Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In high school, Frese was a member of the volleyball and basketball squads for four seasons along with the softball and track teams for a single year.
