As an amateur, he earned an Olympic silver medal for the light- welterweight category at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, gold at the 2009 EU Championships and bronze at the 2007 World Championships.
In June 2009, Saunders was back in the arena for a match at the European Union championships held in Odense with a gold medal, beating competitor who was a previous World Championship bronze medallist Gyula Kate from Hungary on the way.
In the days prior towards the 2009 World Championships due to be held in Milan, Saunders broke his left thumb during a training fight. The potential gold medalist during the competition, Saunders was able to reflect on his injury and said “I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason…I’m going to focus totally on 2012. Maybe then I’ll look back and be glad this all happened”.

Saunders was the winner of his first British champions at the 2006 championships while competing for South Durham ABC.. Saunders qualified to compete in the 2007. World championships held in Chicago and was awarded the bronze medal, beating the likes of South Durham’s local favorite Javier Molina(24:12) and Frenchman Alexis Vastine in order to join fellow compatriots Frankie Gavin and bantam Joe Murray on the podium of medals and, in the process getting himself a place in the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
On the 25th of November, 2008 Saunders was detained by the police over the possibility of dealing in cocaine following a sniffer dog discovered the suspected PS12000 in the amount of substance in his back yard. The charges were dismissed against Saunders in the month of April, when police decided not pursue the case.
Saunders signed his first professional contract with Frank Warren and made his professional boxing debut on 10 February 2012 against Jason Nesbitt scoring a TKO victory in the 3rd round.
