On December 12, 2006, he filed an appeal against his life sentence at the Supreme Court, claiming the evidence presented by Lees was not reliable due to her having seen a picture of him online prior to her interview with police. They also cited an article that linked him to the murder. The appeal was rejected on January 10, 2007. In mid-August 2007, a few parts in Australian media speculated that Australian press speculated Murdoch may soon be able to reveal Falconio’s location. Particularly, the media reported that Murdoch was not a fan of the conditions at Berrimah Prison, on the fringes of Darwin and may disclose where Falconio’s corpse in exchange for the transfer to an institution in Western Australia, given that every avenue of appeal were exhausted. A petition at the High Court was unsuccessful. The appeal was reintroduced to the Northern Territory criminal court of appeal in 2013; however, the appeal was later dropped by his legal team in March of 2014 .
After his acquittal on abduction and rape that was not connected to it, Murdoch was arrested in 2003 and accused of killing Peter Falconio on a remote section on the Stuart Highway near Barrow Creek on the 14th of July, 2001. The case was argued by the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory in Darwin beginning on 17 October. Murdoch did not plead guilty to the charges of murdering Peter Falconio and assaulting and trying to kidnap his lover Joanne Lees. Murdoch was found guilty on the 13th of December, 2005 for Falconio’s murder. He was sentenced for life in prison with an unparole time that was 28 years. He was also found guilty of other charges of assault on Joanne Lees.
