During his college years, Ring played for Chicago Fire Premier in the USL Premier Development League and Princeton 56ers in the National Premier Soccer League. His professional career kicked off when he was drafted in the second round (17th overall) of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft by the San Jose Earthquakes, although he did not sign with the club until a year later due to a hip injury.
He made his professional debut on April 24, 2010 against Chivas USA. In 2013, Ring was traded to the Portland Timbers and made a singular appearance for the team. In January 2014, he returned to his Indiana roots by signing a two-year contract with Indy Eleven in the North American Soccer League (NASL).
Ring extended his stay at Indy Eleven on 27 January 2017, before finally announcing his retirement from professional soccer on February 8, 2019. Throughout his career, Ring’s biggest claim to fame was during a period at Portland Timbers where he earned the highest team-goals-per-minute rate of any Timbers player ever, despite having played only a minute for the team.
