He graduated with the Bachelor of Commerce degree in the University of Otago and in 1988, he completed a one-year postgraduate training in the Swinburne School of Film and Television (now section of the Victorian College of the Arts) located in Melbourne. He was the director of The drama, It Never Rains, in 1996 , as and co-directed documentaries Come As You Are for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and the short film that won awards.
McGann was appointed an Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2006 New Years Honours List. McGann passed away on 2 May 2007 after a long struggle with bowel cancer. The cancer had the disease first started to manifest in 1998.
In 2004 and 2005, McGann received international praise for his debut movie, In My Father’s Den inspired by the novel by Maurice Gee. McGann directed the screenplay, and wrote the screenplay. was the director of the feature.

The film was awarded it the Fipresci Prize at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival and the Mercedes Benz Youth Jury Prize at the 52nd San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain in the same year. It also won was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Seattle International Film Festival in 2005. It was among the top 10 highest-grossing New Zealand films.
