She was raised at San Diego. She was the daughter of Ruby Cremaschi-Schwimmer was the principal of Lincoln High School (San Diego). His father, Lee St. John had left the family shortly before her birth. Her mother later got married to an older man who physically assaulted St. John and her older sister. Because of a condition known as pre-femoral focal disorder St. John had her right leg amputated below her knee when she was five years old. After graduating from magna cum laude of Harvard University in 1986, St. John won a Rhodes Scholarship to Trinity College, Oxford, where she received her M.Litt. qualification in the field of economics, in the year 1990.

In 2006, St. John was featured in a national Starbucks campaign dubbed “The Way I See It” The campaign featured beverage cups that featured inspiring quotes from a variety of public celebrities. The St. John’s quote read as the following: “I was ahead in the slalom. But in the second run, everyone fell on a dangerous spot. I was beaten by a woman that got up faster than I did. I learned that people fall down, winners get up, and gold medal winners just get up faster.”

In 1984, at the Winter Paralympics in Innsbruck, Austria, St. John received a bronze medal for the slalom and a silver medal at the big slalom and was awarded an overall silver medal performance. This earned she the title of second-fastest woman on the planet on one leg during the year.
