Bobby Barth (born December 5 1952, in Coffeyville, Kansas, United States) is a popular American artist, songwriter as well as a record producer and guitarist. As a musician, Barth is most known for his emotionally soaring style and slide playing.
After just a few months, Barth, Turpin and Riley joined the forces of the guitarist Michael Osborne and drummer Teddy Mueller to re-invent the Babyface concept, without the interference that came from ASI Records and emerged in Gainesville, Florida as Alien. It was 1979 when MCA Records penned a agreement with the popular music labels Curb Records to form a company to co-produce rock groups. Alien were the initial band to sign a contract with the MCA-Curb label . After the band’s name was changed to Axe in response to the release of the motion-picture Alien produced two records: Axe in addition to Living on the Edge. Barth recalls that both records did not accurately represent the group (despite the hit song “Battles” being played by stations that played albums) because of their lack of studio knowledge as well as the “dreadful” choice of producers. Following the industry-wide riot in 1980, as did many other groups, Axe found itself without an official label. In collaboration with Roger Probert of Atlantic Records The band signed the stage for a partnership with Atlantic. The details are a bit hazy However, in the blink of an eye, the band, was managed under the management of Jim Dawson and Arnakata Management and produced by Thom Allom of Judas Priest was signed to Atco Records instead of Atlantic and with an entirely new producer and manager. The albums produced under the contract include Offering along with Nemesis. Offering was the first album that brought the band to the notice of American radio by way of “Rock and Roll Party in the Streets” in the year the single, with no backing from Atco was included in an appearance on the Billboard Top 100 songs for the year-end charts and the album made one of the Billboard Top 75 Albums chart, both for 1981.
The band continued to tour and record, until in 1984 Osborne and Barth were involved in a fatal car crash. Barth escaped with only spinal injuries, but Osborne was killed in the crash. Barth recorded his solo record, Two Hearts One Beat, as a tribute to Osborne in 1985.
Although a working musician all his life, Barth says his greatest accomplishment was receiving the Colorado Master of the Year Award in 1998 while serving as the Worshipful Master of Denver Lodge No. 5, Colorado’s oldest Masonic Lodge. He continues to be active in Freemasonry and in the rebuilding of New Orleans. He is also Vice President and a founding member of the Louisiana Grand Chapter of the “Widows Sons” motorcycle Riding Assoc. Barth is also currently an honorary member of the Alabama Widows Sons Masonic Riders Association in Montgomery, Alabama.
Barth started Babyface at the same time Barth launched Babyface around the same time, along together with Colorado drummer Bobby Miles, California bassist Mike Turpin, and Wisconsin keyboardist Edgar Riley, Jr. The group went through some changes to its members, and recorded their debut and only album for the now defunct ASI Records. While the band felt that they were betrayed by the producer who altered the direction of the record once the band had left their studios, the album was a hit and a top 20 single in the Billboard A/C charts. The group, which believed it to be a rock group with a brain and was performing for a large audience that expected to hear their top 20 single the band was forced to end its existence in 1978.
