He is among four pitchers who pitched the minimum of 70 total games during each during the 4 seasons of 2004 to 2008, with the other three being Scott Schoeneweis (who has done this for five consecutive years), Chad Qualls, and Dan Wheeler.
After the Cubs declined arbitration, Howry signed a $2.75 million, one-year contract with the San Francisco Giants on December 3, 2008.
On December 28, 2009, Howry signed a one-year deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks with a club option for 2011.
He made his debut in the major leagues as a member of the Chicago White Sox in 1998 and was the team’s closer, preserving 28 games from 1999 before his replacement by Keith Foulke in early May 2000. The team traded him with the Boston Red Sox in 2002 however, he was struck by injuries to his right elbow that caused him to be placed on the disabled list for 60 days in the latter part of 2003. Howry was able to recover from elbow surgery and returned to his team, the Cleveland Indians in 2004. Over the course of a year and two-thirds during his time with Cleveland Indians, Howry posted an 11-6 record, with the strikeouts of 87 and an impressive 2.61 ERA.

Howry was a player and student at in the field during his time at Deer Valley High School in Arizona He then was a student at McNeese State University and was selected into the San Francisco Giants in the fifth round of the 1994 Major League Baseball Draft.
In 1997, Howry was one of six prospects (along with Keith Foulke, Lorenzo Barcelo, Mike Caruso, Ken Vining along with Brian Manning) traded to the White Sox in exchange for Wilson Alvarez, Danny Darwin along with Danny Darwin, Wilson Alvarez and Roberto Hernandez in what became called The White Flag Trade.
In late 2005, Howry signed a three-year, $12 million deal with the Chicago Cubs, where he filled in for an injured Ryan Dempster during the 2007 playoff run, earning eight saves with a 3.32 ERA, and was one of the Cubs’ primary relievers in 2008, sometimes serving as setup man to All-Star closer Kerry Wood.
