Bob Hagedorn (born February 16 1952) is an American journalist and politician who was a member of the Colorado House of Representatives as an Democrat from 1993 until 2001. After serving for eight months in state government, Hagedorn was elected to the Colorado Senate in 2000, and again in 2004 representing Senate District 29 that includes the central region of Aurora, Colorado.

Hagedorn was named “Legislator of the Year” by a range of organizations such as his award from the American Cancer Society in 2000 The Colorado Association of Commerce and Industry presented him with the award in 1999 and 1995, and his award from the Colorado Association of Public Employees in 2004.

Hagedorn has been elected first to his seat in the Colorado House of Representatives in 1992, and was re-elected three times and a re-election in 1996 after battling drinking and being in rehab due to his mother’s cancer diagnosis. While in the state legislature, Hagedorn focused on issues like legislation protecting patients and prevention strategies within the justice system and was recognized in the Democratic Leadership Council as one of the “100 to Watch” among younger Democratic officeholders. The term limit is a matter of choice, Hagedorn continued to serve on his position in the Colorado State Senate, elected in 2000 and 2004 to represent the heavily Democratic district. Hagedorn focused on health issues particularly during his Senate time in office and also during his 2004 election campaign.

The family was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina to a military family the Hagedorns settled in Aurora, Colorado in 1965 and went to local schools and graduated in Aurora Central High School at the age of 70. He received a bachelor’s diploma in journalistic studies from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1974. He also earned a master’s diploma of urban policy at the University of Colorado Denver in 1979.

Hagedorn has been an instructor in political science for the Metropolitan State College of Denver and was on the faculty from 1990 until 2004. He also has worked in the areas of public relations, marketing as well as journalism, serving as the editor of Capitol Hill Neighborhood News. From 1998 until 2004 Hagedorn was on the board for Arapahoe House, a non-profit supplier of alcohol and drug treatment services.

In the 2007 session of the Colorado General Assembly, Hagedorn served as chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee and as a member of the Senate Transportation Committee In past Senate sessions, Hagedorn has served on the Senate Finance Committee and the Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee. During the 2007 session, Hagedorn successfully sponsored legislation to establish a state prescription drug discount program—the first bill signed into law by Gov. Bill Ritter—and to declare John Denver’s “Rocky Mountain High” the second official state song.
