Robert John Apodaca (/ Apodaca, a: p oU “‘ d” a: @ /; born January 31st 1950) is an ex- American Major League Baseball pitcher as well as an advisor for Colorado Rockies General manager Jeff Bridich. Since 2013, he has been working with pitchers of the Rockies lower-level minor league affiliates.
He remained a key player in the Mets in the bullpen from 1977. In the spring of 1978, Apodaca injured the ligament inside his elbow. This caused him to miss the whole season. He pitched only 4 innings with the Mets triple-A affiliate called Tidewater Tides, Tidewater Tides, in 1979 but did not pitch in the entire season of the year 1980.
In 1988, he served as pitching coach for the St. Lucie Mets under Clint Hurdle in Hurdle’s first season as a professional manager. The two would work on and off together in the Mets’ minor league system for the next couple of years until Apodaca became the Mets’ major league pitching coach from 1996 to 1999.
Pitching in hitter friendly Coors Field the Rockies’ pitching staff consistently finished with the National League’s worst ERA. Since coming into existence in 1993, Rockies pitchers finished with the league’s highest ERA in all but two seasons, finishing second to the Florida Marlins in 1998, and the Houston Astros in 2000. This trend continued until 2006, when the Rockies finished with the thirteenth (out of sixteen) best ERA in the league. This was due mostly to a cut in home runs allowed (155, third best in the NL, versus 175, eleventh in the NL in 2005).

Apodaca had a role at third base during high school, and later changed to an player during his time at Cerritos College. After moving from California State University, Los Angeles (where Apodaca was named an official Golden Eagles’ MVP as an undergraduate) Apodaca joined the New York Mets as an amateur free agent in the year 1971. He played for three seasons with the farm program, finishing 24-11 and an 2.73 earn-run average prior to making his MLB debut in September as an ‘call-up’ 1973. He played the two Pittsburgh Pirates batters, walking both. The first one came back to score, which gave Apodaca an inexhaustible ERA in 1973.
Apodaca earned a spot in the Mets the bullpen in 1974. He was able to secure his first save of his career during his debut appearance in the regular season. The first time he won a game was on May 13 when he was a pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals and the future Hall of Hall of Famer Bob Gibson. In all, he was 6-6-3 with three saves and an 3.50 ERA in his rookie season.
After six games with the double A Jackson Mets in 1981, Apodaca retired and went into coaching. Immediately after stepping off the mound for good, he was hired as a coach with the Short-Season A ball Little Falls Mets of the New York–Penn League. He moved to the double A Jackson Mets in 1983 before moving to the Columbia Mets of the South Atlantic League from 1984 to 1987. In 1986, he was named SAL Pitching Coach of the Year when his staff went 90–42 with a 3.38 ERA.
