The first of his books published was The Movement: English Poetry and Fiction in the early 1950s (Oxford University Press 1980). The book was then followed in the year 1982 with a critique review of Seamus Heaney’s poems. He also co-edited in 1982 The Penguin Book of Contemporary British Poetry along with Andrew Motion. Morrison’s first collection in poetry collection, Dark Glasses, was published by Chatto and Windus in 1984. Other publications comprise Ballad of the Yorkshire Ripper (1986) which was written in Yorkshire dialect as well as Pendle Witches (1996), illustrated by etchings drawn by Paula Rego. The poems of his have appeared in various anthologies, such as Penguin Modern Poets 1 (1995).

Philip Blake Morrison (born 8 October 1950) is an English writer and poet who has published work in various fiction and nonfiction genres. The most notable success was publishing his autobiography, And When Do You Last Speak to Your Father? which was the winner of the J. R. Ackerley Prize for autobiography. Morrison has also written an analysis of James Bulger’s murder In which was awarded the J. R. Ackerley Prize for Autobiography, If. In 2003 Morrison was Professor of Life and Creative Writing in Goldsmiths College, University of London. Morrison is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

Morrison was a resident of Thornton-in-Craven and was a student at the Grammar School. He then studied English Literature at the University of Nottingham and UCL. Morrison worked as a writer for The Times Literary Supplement (1978-81) as well as the literary editor of The Observer (1981-89) and The Independent on Sunday (1989-95). Morrison’s initial writing career beyond journalism included stints as a poet as well as a critic. Morrison became a full-time writer in 1995. Since then, he has published autobiographies and novels along with plays, libretti and the writing of television. He has written for The New Yorker, the London Review of Books, The New Statesman, The New York Times and Poetry Review and since 2001 He has also written in The Guardian. In 2003, he became Professor of Life and Creative Writing in Goldsmiths College, London, and in 2008 he was made the chair of The Reader Organisation, the UK center to research and promote reading as a therapy activity. In 2006, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Arts by Plymouth University.

A three-part television adaptation of Morrison’s 2010 novel The Last Weekend was shown on ITV1 in August–September 2012.
