The 2016 Althing elections which took place in 2016, The Independence Party won 21 seats and the Progressive party was able to win only eight seats. After the results were announced the Prime Minister Sigurdur Ingi Johannsson resigned from his position. A new coalition comprising Bright Future, the Independence Party, the Reform Party and Bright Future was formed in January 2017, with Bjarni named Premier Minister.
