William Carl Schelly (November 2 1951 – September 12 2019,) earned the Eisner Award as an novelist who wrote about the history of comics and the comic book fandom and also wrote biographical biographies about comic book creators such as Otto Binder, L.B. Cole, Joe Kubert, Harvey Kurtzman, John Stanley along with James Warren as well as silent comedy film actor Harry Langdon.

Schelly received the San Diego Comic-Con International Inkpot Award for Fandom Services in 2011. He also won his 2016 Eisner Award for Best Comics-Related Book for his autobiography, Harvey Kurtzman: The Man Who Inspired Mad as well as Revolutionized Humor in America (Fantagraphics Books 2015)

The year 1990 was when Schelly started studying the story of the first time in the world of comic books. In the end, his work led to a book-length piece entitled The Golden Age of Comic Fandom The book was well-received and quickly selling all the way to its final destination, and selected for an award called the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award. An updated and expanded edition was released in 1998. A second printing was made in 2003.

Bill Schelly was born in Walla Walla, Washington, and was avid comic book reader from the age of 1960. He lived in the suburbs that was part of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania when he discovered the comics fandom in 1964. When he saw his first publication on comics, a fanzine that was mimeographed known as Batmania Schelly decided to create a fanzine magazine himself. Schelly launched Super-Heroes Anonymous in February 1965 as the first of the series of magazines which he edited and published up to 1972.

It was through the publication of his fanzine Sense of Wonder that Schelly was recognized by the comics world. The magazine was created in Pittsburgh and then primarily released after his move into Lewiston, Idaho, in 1967, the magazine was originally a collection comprising comic strips from the amateur community and stories. In the year 1970, while studying at in the University of Idaho, Schelly altered the layout for Sense of Wonder to a “general fanzine” made up of art and articles on the development of comics. At the conclusion of the 12-issue run, Sense of Wonder had presented the first attempt at chronicling the entire career of comics pioneer Will Eisner, as well as works by Steve Ditko, Frank Frazetta and Stanley Pitt. It was cancelled after he completed his studies at his school at the University of Idaho with a B.S. in education in 1973.

Bill Schelly died September 12, 2019, due to blood clotting in the lungs during chemotherapy for his recently diagnosed multiple myeloma.
