Bibian Mentel is one of the most popular and richest Snowboarder who was born on September 27, 1972 in Utrecht, Netherlands. Bibian Mentel- Spee (born 27 September 1972) is a three-time Winter Paralympics gold- medalist, and five-time world champion para-snowboarding athlete of the Netherlands. Bibian Mentel was awarded the paralympic gold medal in the snowboard cross discipline at both the 2018 and 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, as also winning the banked slalom event in 2018despite having battled cancer for nine times since the start of the century and also winning the medals in the 2018 Winter Games at the age of 45.

In 2012, Mentel created her very own “Mentelity foundation”, to encourage, motivate and encourage children and teens who have physical disabilities (to keep) to participate in sport, both generally, as well in extreme board sports, in particular. Through this method supported by Foundation volunteers, she hopes to contribute positively to the physical and mental growth of physically disabled people.

In 2013 Mentel qualified for the 2014 Winter Paralympics. At the opening ceremony she was the flag bearer for the Netherlands. She won the Paralympic gold medal in the snowboard cross event.

Four months after the amputation she was able to ride a snowboard again, despite still being unable to walk using crutches. The following January she was asked to present the trophy at the Dutch championships halfpipe. She decided to compete in the Dutch snowboard cross championships, which she won — in the main class — not the handicapped, – her seventh Dutch championship. This inspired Mentel to work with Dutch member of the International Paralympic Committee Rita van Driel to get snowboarding adopted as a medal event at the paralympic Winter Games. After eight years of lobbying this was achieved in 2012.

While running a training session for the national championships held in Breckenridge, Colorado in December 1999, she sustained an injury to her ankle. She was able to finish the season but the ankle was unsettling. The x-rays revealed a spot on her tibia, which was identified as a malignant bone tumor. The tumor was surgically removed and Mentel began to train in preparation for training for the 2002 Winter Olympics for which she was able to qualify. It was soon clear that the tumor had grown back and could be spreading throughout her body through her blood. She decided to remove her leg.
