Bia Lessa was born Sao Paulo on June 10 1958, however, her family later relocated from there to Rio de Janeiro. From a young age, Lessa was a fan of acting and later began lessons at the famous O Tablado Theater. Her first credits as an actor was the adaptation of Maria Clara Machado’s Maroquinhas Friu-Fru by Wolf Maya. She later formed her own theatre organization, Carranca, alongside Gilda Guilhon and Daniel Dantas, and one of the first plays they presented was Bertolt Brecht’s Mr Puntila along with the character of his Man Matti.
In 2002, she directed music video for the synthpop group Metro’s songs “Mensagem de Amor” and “Achei Bonito”; her husband is the band’s drummer.
In 2013 Lessa and Gringo Cardia were invited to serve as the carnavalescos of the GRES São Clemente samba school. Cardia, however, later abandoned the project because of creative divergences with the school’s directorial staff.
In 2014 she idealized and founded the Paço do Frevo Museum in Recife, Pernambuco.
In 1999, she organised the exhibition Brasileiro que Nem Eu. Que nem Quem? Que nem Quem? was published at Que nem Quem? was published at FAAP at the FAAP in Sao Paulo, to critical applause. She also created the Brazilian pavilion for Expo 2000 in Hanover, Germany and created in 2006 the Grande Sertao: Veredas expo in 2006, which commemorated the 50th anniversary of publication of Joao Guimaraes-Rosa’s novel. The novel was published at the recently opened Museu da Lingua Portuguesa.

Beatriz Ferreira Lessa (born June 10 1958) who is popularly known by the name Bia Lessa, is a Brazilian film maker, theater director and actress from the theatre and curator. She often works with her husband Dany Roland.
In 1981, she was a part of Nelson Rodrigues’ O Eterno Retorno as well as in Antunes Filho’s version of de Andrade’s novel Macunaima and was one of Filho’s main collaborators for the next two years. She did, however, give up acting in order to pursue a career as a director of theater and in 1983 she directed her debut play that was a reworking to Graciliano Ramos’ novel A Terra dos Meninos Pelados. The play was well-received, which led her to direct more plays, with her most famous productions include the adaptations to Virginia Woolf’s Orlando (starring Fernanda Torres in the title role) and Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters, Robert Musil’s The Man Without Qualities and Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth. The majority (if it’s not always) of her productions are with her husband the musician Dany Roland. He helps to the sound design and, occasionally, the music itself. In 1997, Lessa along with Roland produced their debut full-length film, which was critically highly acclaimed Crede-Mi which was loosely inspired by Thomas Mann’s novel The Holy Sinner. Lessa as well as Roland are parents to two children: Maria and Clara.
In 2010 she directed an adaptation of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Il trovatore, which premiered at the reopening of the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro after its extensive restoration process. In the same year she was hired by the Ministry of Culture to organize the ceremony of the Order of Cultural Merit.
