Betty McCollum is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on July 12, 1954 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. McCollum was the first female to be elected in Congress in Minnesota since Coya Knutson was elected in the 1950s.
Following the Rep. for the 4th district Bruce Vento decided not to run for the 13th term due to an illness that occurred in the year 2000 (he died prior to voting), McCollum won the DFL nomination to succeed the incumbent. The district is largely Democratic in the Minnesota congressional districts only the fiveth District is thought to be more Democratic. The DFL has been in the seat for a long time, without interruption, since 1949. McCollum’s biggest concern when she won office was not her Republican opponent the State Senate Linda Runbeck, but Independence Party candidate Tom Foley. Foley was previously County Attorney for Ramsey County (almost all of which is located in the fourth District) as the county’s attorney. He was a Democrat. Many believed that Foley could snatch away enough votes from McCollum in order for Runbeck to prevail. However, McCollum beat Runbeck with a margin of 17 points which put Foley coming in at an unintentionally third position. Foley was able to hold McCollum to 48 percent and she was the only Democrat who did not win at minimum 50 percent of the vote in the time since Democrats have been gaining ground throughout the district. Since then, the district been restored to its former form and McCollum was reelected nine times with no significant opposition.
In 2004 McCollum gained national visibility when she and fellow Democrat Jim McDermott of Washington called for Secretary of Education Rod Paige to resign for claiming the National Education Association was “a terrorist organization.”
McCollum advocates shifting America’s energy consumption to cleaner, non- carbon-based sources. Along with Al Franken and Kit Bond, she introduced the Renewable Energy and Efficiency Act, a bill to utilize thermal energy sources and create renewable energy production tax credits. She also voted for the American Recovery and Reinvestment in 2009.
The first time she was elected for her seat on the North St. Paul city council in 1986. In 1992, she became a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives after she beat a Minnesota state legislator at the DFL primary. She was a member for four years within the Minnesota House before being elected to Congress in 2000.
