In the summer of 1999 Meier was signed by Borussia Monchengladbach. He played in just two league games during his time there at every major level in German football. After three years, he was relegated back to second division, and later to play with Rot Weiss Ahlen.
Meier died on 2 August 2012 of an apparent heart attack, after being admitted to the hospital for food poisoning. He was only 40 years of age.
