In Lyon, Soustrot entered the Conservatoire de Lyon at the age of 9 with classes in trumpet and cornet. Four months later, he won the gold medal for cornet, trumpet and solfeggio. In 1970, he was an instructor under Maurice Andre at the Conservatoire de Paris. He was awarded numerous prizes such as in 1975 the very first Trumpet Prize and won several famous competitions, including Prague the year 1974, and Geneva for 1975. In 1976, he took home the first prize of the Maurice Andre contest.
He started his career in the year 1975 as a solo trumpeter with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Sergiu Celibidache. Then he joined in 1976, he joined the Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France under the direction of Gilbert Amy.
He was made a chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2011.
