Kahan was the person who came up with The Bente Kahan Foundation in 2006 with the intention of promoting human rights and respect for each other in the context of the Holocaust. The foundation’s first project was to restore the White Stork Synagogue in Wroclaw The only synagogue of the city that survived the Holocaust as part in their effort to protect the 800-year-old history of Jews in Lower Silesia. The work was completed in 2010.
In 1990, following her time in various Norwegian theater companies, she started her own company, Teater Dybbuk in Oslo. The year 2001 was the time she relocated together with her partner and their two kids to Wroclaw. She is currently the Director of Wroclaw Centre for Jewish Culture and Education. Bente Kahan (born 23 September 1958) is a Norwegian solo singer as well as a musician, actress and playwright. She is most well-known for her interpretations and performances of Yiddish folk songs and plays. Since 2002, she’s been living and working in Poland.
Kahan began her acting career beginning in the year 1981, at Habima theater at Tel Aviv and at the Nationaltheatret in Norway and performed first as a vocalist in Oslo in a production in Yiddish and the cabaret show Over Byen, in 1983. Together with Ellen Foyn-Bruun, she wrote three stage plays. Bessie (about the singer of blues Bessie Smith) in 1986; Letter Without a Stamp in 1988, and Stemmer in Theresienstadt in 1995. It was transliterated into German the following year, before being translated in English in 1997.
Kahan was honored in 2013 with the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, for her efforts on behalf of intercultural dialogue and for the rescue of the jewish heritage of Lower Silesia.
