Benito Tiamzon (20 March 1951) is an Filipino political activist who, until his detention during March of 2014 through Philippine security forces was thought to be the chairman of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and its armed wing, known as the New People’s Army (NPA).
Tiamzon and his wife and a senior leader of the CPP leadership along with five other people were detained at the request of Philippine Security forces at Cebu in 2014 under the administration of Benigno Aquino III; they were discovered by surveillance since relief efforts began following Typhoon Haiyan in the year prior. They were found with firearms, grenades , and ammunition. Tiamzons were wanted on murder charges. Tiamzons were wanted for murder in connection with their involvement in the murder of 15 civilians whose bodies were found in an unmarked grave in Inopacan, Leyte in 2006. They were freed from detention in August 2016 , following the directive by president Rodrigo Duterte as they were appointed as representatives for the National Democratic Front to the peace talks with the Government of the Philippines to take place at Oslo, Norway. Duterte declared that peace talks will not be conducted in February 2017 and he was expecting NDF representatives including Tiamzons, to Tiamzons to “on their own… return and go back to prison.”
Tiamzon’s work for the Leftist movement started in the 1970s, when he formed labor unions to represent market vendors as well as workers working in Marikina as well as Caloocan. The year 1972 saw him detained when the then- President Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law. In the detention center of Fort Bonifacio, he managed to escape and was in hiding until his arrest in 2014.

Tiamzon is a graduate at his time at the University of the Philippines Diliman in the 1960s, when he was a student at the university. He wrote in the Philippine Collegian, the school’s student newspaper, and was an active participant in the UP Alpha Sigma Fraternity. Later, he joined Samahang Demokratiko ng Kabataan (“Association of Democratic Youth”) which is a progressive organization that, together and Kabataang Makabayan (“Patriotic Youth”) became the vanguard of the national movement for democracy in the Philippines under the administration of Ferdinand Marcos, especially during his second term.
In the 1970s, Tiamzon was assigned to Samar to serve as a “political redirection” for the NPA cadre in Samar. In 1975, he was elected secretary of CPP’s East Visayas Regional Party Committee. In 1976 the CPP released an organizational document that outlined the organization’s activities in the countryside. Tiamzon is believed to be the author of the document, drawing upon his extensive experiences in Samar. Other previous posts include the command of CPP’s Southern Luzon Commission and Sorsogon Regional Mobile Force as well as director of the CPP’s National Commission for Mass Movement. Based on the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Tiamzon was involved in numerous CPP’s main actions since 1987, in the year Jose Maria Sison, the CPP’s first chairman, was forced to Exile in the Netherlands. Tiamzon was instrumental in bringing together CPP CPP in the early 1990s following the party split due to the second Great Rectification Movement. He was elected as the CPP’s Chairman between 2004 between 2004 and in 2008.
