Benedikt reminds me of an old-time Hollywood figure—a studio head, someone who is in firm command and has his hand in everything.

Today, TASCHEN has offices in Cologne, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, Madrid and Paris and stores in Beverly Hills, Brussels, Cologne, Hollywood, Hong Kong, London, Miami, Milan, and Paris. In 2014, TASCHEN opened their first art gallery in Los Angeles. The publishing house employs more than 250 staff members worldwide and many longtime freelance editors.

in 1998 Taschen bought the Chemosphere house designed by John Lautner located situated in the Hollywood Hills which was long regarded as the most modern home in the world. Taschen restored it to Lautner’s original concept and included black slate floors laser-cut by lasers that were impossible to make at the time that the house was first designed, and establishing Taschen as a prominent cultural persona within Hollywood circles as well as around the world. The year 2000 saw Billy Wilder told magazine Vanity Fair that “Benedikt reminds me of an old-fashioned Hollywood character. A studio boss, someone who is always in control and is involved in every aspect.” Then, Matt Weiner, creator and producer of the popular show Mad Men, described Taschen as “a marvel with taste when it comes to the publishing industry … The company constantly provides top-quality both the style and content … Taschen documents both the present as well as the past in a way that is indispensable.”

Benedikt Taschen is one of the richest Publisher & Art Collector from Germany. According to our analysis, Wikipedia, Forbes & Business Insider, Benedikt Taschen 's net worth $5 Million. (Last Update: December 11, 2023)

Benedikt Taschen was the eldest of five children. Both fathers were physicians. At an early age, he was a passionate fan of comic books and a reader enthusiast. When he was 12 years old, he started a profitable mail order company that sold comic books that were previously owned by to the United States. In February of 1980 just before the 19th anniversary of his birthday, he established 250 square feet (23 meters) comic book shop, called TASCHEN COMICS in his hometown in Cologne, Germany, in which he put his huge comic book collection to be sold. Then he started creating comics by himself. The year 1984 was when his entry into the business of art books started with a blunder: using money he borrowed from the aunt of his, he bought 40000 copies of the English-language Magritte monographs for just one dollar at a trade fair within the United States. After two months, the artist sold all the books for the affordable cost that was 9.95 Deutsche Mark. To Taschen this was a sign of an opportunity in the market for art books that was previously dominated by high-priced editions. It also showed that there was a an appetite for affordable, well-designed illustrated art books that were multilingual. Invigorated by the achievement, he decided to make his first attempt at publishing art books by publishing the publication of a monograph about artist Annie Leibovitz. In the 80s TASCHEN books were sold in more than a dozen different languages, at prices that made art books accessible to collectors and students alike.

By the end of the 1990s in the late 1990s, he was a household name for his work in the publishing industry. In the year the editor of Vanity The Magazine’s Matt Tyrnauer deemed him, “one of the few people in business who has the courage to do exactly what he wants whenever he wants to”, Benedikt Taschen testified the theory with Helmut Newton’s SUMO which was the biggest bound book in the 20th century . it was released in 1999 with a stand created by Philippe Starck, at what was then an astounding cost of $1500. The book was criticized by critics as crazy and predicted a significant financial loss to the business, however at the time of the publication date, more than 7000 autographed and signed copies were already sold. The book helped establish TASCHEN’s reputation international, and led to the more impressive GOAT -the Greatest of All Time, an ode of Muhammad Ali, published in the spring of 2004. The book was created over four years, GOAT weighs 75 lbs and measures the size of 20″ x 20″ in dimensions, and contains more than 800 pages of original and archival illustrations, photographs as well as essays and articles – including those by Ali himself. The SUMO line of books that are oversized with stands that are unique and designed by internationally renowned designers has become a well-established segment of the company, featuring titles that celebrate the work of Sebastiao Salgado David Hockney, David Bailey Annie Liebovitz and the story of the Rolling Stones.

I have done a lot of books, and I can tell you — without mentioning names — that publishers are not all like him. There are very few like him. Or there are none like him. He is also, I might add, a madman.
