Bejan Matur is one of the most popular and richest Author who was born on September 14, 1968 in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey. Matur was born into an Alevi Kurdish family on September 14, 1968 in the historic Hittite city Kahramanmaras within Turkey’s Mediterranean Region. Her initial schooling was in her home village. then she attended the well-established Lycee within the regional’s largest centre of culture Gaziantep. The years she spent there were spent with her sisters away of their families. She completed her studies in Law in Ankara University, but has not practiced law in the past. While at university her work was featured in various literary magazines. Her poetry was deemed by critics to be “dark and mystic”. The shamanist poems with their pagan motifs, rooted in the past, not the present, and describing her home and the landscape and the life of her village, drew lots of attention.

In May 2009, she released an album-book entitled Dogunun Kapisi: Diyarbakir (The Gate of East: Diyarbakir). This book is about the city of Diyarbakir which is the one of the ancestral homes for Kurdish as well as Armenian people. The author has written a detailed history of the city that is almost 300 years old. Through her poetic writing as well as the photographs, readers can look back at the history of the city from the beginning of times to the present. The book is regarded by critics as one of the top books ever written on an Anatolian city.

In 2010, she published Kader Denizi (Sea of Fate) with the photographs taken by Mehmet Günyeli after the exhibition of Sea of Fate in the prestigious galleries in Istanbul and Ankara.

In February 2011 she published her recent book called Dağın Ardına Bakmak (Looking Behind the Mountain) which is her first prose book. It is about the PKK Guerillas. For the book, she went to steep Kandil Mountain, where PKK is located and hided, for making interviews with the guerrillas, fight against the Turkish Army. The book is the first attempt to show off the personal stories and traumas of the guerillas behind the frontiers in the war.

Since 2005, she’s written regular columns for the Op-Ed section of the daily newspaper Zaman as an editor. She occasionally appeared in an English circulated newspaper called Today’s Zaman. She writes mostly on Kurdish political issues, Armenian issue, daily issues of minority groups including prison literature, as well as issues affecting women. She also manages an arts foundation named DKSV (Diyarbakir Cultural Arts Foundation) situated in Diyarbakir. She has been working on social projects for women, children and younger people who were evicted from their villages.
