Kak’s ex-husband, Bharat Kak, belongs to the Kashmiri Pundit family who settled in Rajasthan. His family, originally from Kashmir has been residing within Rani, Rajasthan (in Pali district) for over two centuries. They have long-standing relationships with the Nehru family that was a different Kashmiri Pandit family settled in Rajasthan The Nehrus family had resided within Khetri, Rajasthan, before Motilal Nehru made the move into Allahabad in the latter part of the 1800s to begin practicing law in the Allahabad High Court. After getting married to Bharat Kak Beena Kak began her political career in the mid 1980s and became an official part of the Congress Party. In 1985 in the context of Rajiv Gandhi’s lauded efforts to attract ‘new new blood’ to politics and the Congress party, Bina, educated in government schools , who had spent her childhood in the tiny villages in Kota district, started at the grass-roots level as an Congress worker. While doing so, she also offered her mother-in law a helping help in the field of agriculture. She is also credited with the honor for being the first woman entrepreneurs who went on to become the (president of the Youth Congress in Pali). Then she was elected president of the Mahila Congress President of the district. Her work was lauded by the state’s leaders, especially Vishnu Modi, and Gauri Punia. She also actively campaigned for Moolchand in 1983.
The year 1985 was the one when Bina Kak was elected to the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from Sumerpur (Rajasthan Assembly constituency) and was elected an MLA from 1985 until the year 1990. In 1990, she lost just 274 votes. Many experts believe that if she had been given a recount, she may have been able to win. Bina Kak was reelected as an MLA in 1993, and in 1998 from the Sumerpur district. She was defeated in 2003, only to make her return in the year 2008. In 2013 she was sacked by the BJP.
Bina Kak served for a long period as Cabinet Minister in the Government of Rajasthan, holding at various times the portfolios of Woman & Child Development, Tourism, Art & Culture, Archeology and Printing & Stationery. She was also the Minister of State for Tourism and Cultural Affairs of Rajasthan from 1998 to 2003. She was also the forest minister during the last Congress government up to 2013.
Kak was born as Beena Bhasin, one of the six children of Dr. M.R. Bhasin, a government doctor. She has three brothers and two sisters. Her brothers are Dr. B.B. Bhasin, a doctor based in the UK,B.B. Bhasin, a retired IPS officer, and Late Col. Indra Bhushan who died in 2004. Her sisters are Kusum Suri, a retired school teacher based in the United States, and Kamla Bhasin, a writer and feminist activist.
Bina Kak married Bharat Kak in the early 80s. They had the birth of a son, named Ankur Kak and a daughter, Amrita Jhunjhunwala. Ankur Kak, the elder among the pair, is a chef and is currently working in real estate development in Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan. He was married in 2009 got married to Milan Rai, a lady who has a lot of the same interests as him.
