Beatriz Elena Paredes Rangel (born 18 August 1953) is an Mexican politician who was President of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). It was her first time as a woman to be elected as the Governor of Tlaxcala and was the only woman to hold the office of Governor of a state during Mexican history.
On the 5th of October, 2009, she made public her intention in running for president of Mexico in 2012 as well as her pro-choice position regarding abortion issues. The current ambassador is for Mexico within Brazil. Additionally, she is a part of the Washington D.C. the think tank, the Inter- American Dialogue.
Paredes has held a variety of roles within the PRI she has held, mostly representing the indigenous and rural branches that the party. She was the chief secretary for the PRI and was a candidate for the president of her party, but was defeated by Roberto Madrazo. In 2007, she ran for the presidency of the party and was able to win by a wide margin. Paredes has also voiced that she supports the legalization of the same-sex marriages within Mexico in 2010 following Mexico City legalized same sex marriage.

Paredes Rangel was a student of Sociology in the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) but she never graduated. Her political journey began at 21 when she was an Tlaxcala State deputy (1974-77) and later served as the Governor’s adviser of Tlaxcala (1978-80). In 1982, she was appointed the Undersecretary for Agrarian Reform in 1987, and then from that year to 1992 , she was the the Governor for Tlaxcala. She also served on the Chamber of Deputies, in the Senate and the President Carlos Salinas appointed her Ambassador to Cuba in 1993. She was the President of the Chamber of Deputies in 2001-2002.
The 2006 Federal District election in 2006, she ran for the office of Head of State (mayor) from Mexico City, representing an alliance between both the PRI along with the PVEM and PVEM. She was defeated by Marcelo Ebrard.
