Bassma Kodmani was born Damascus, Syria in 1958. As a young girl, she was a student at her school “Ecole Franciscaine”, a French Christian school located in Damascus. Her father worked in the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as diplomat. Following the victory of the war of 1967 in 1967, he was involved in a dispute against the minister of foreign affairs, and was then imprisoned for 6 months. This forced him to move out of Syria and his entire family and relocate to Lebanon where they lived for 3 years , from 1968 until 1971. After 1971, they relocated to London in the United Kingdom, where Bassma Kodmani’s father was able to find work in the United Nations.

The year 2005 was the time that Bassma Kodmani founded in 2005 the Arab Reform Initiative (ARI) which is a group of independent Arab institutions of research and public policy that has members from both the United States and Europe. This Arab Reform Initiative began to be created by four directors from Arab policy research institutes that have chosen to collaborate in cooperation with four European and one US think tank called the US/Middle East Project. Through research and policy recommendations The ARI has the declared goal of promoting democratic reform and decentralization across the Arab world. It hopes to start an exchange of ideas between institutions of policy in the Arab world to “advance the understanding of decision-makers and opinion leaders on issues of reform in the Arab world.” Furthermore it is the Arab Reform Initiative “aims to raise awareness in the Arab world about successful transitions to democracy in other parts of the world, and of the mechanisms and compromises which made such successful transitions possible.”

In 2005, Bassma Kodmani became the executive director of the Arab Reform Initiative, a network of think-tanks and policy institutes devoted to the study of the Arab world.

Bassma Kodmani holds a doctorate degree of political science from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris. She has authored multiple books, academic papers and articles in French and English on the issue of the democratization in the Arab world, the Palestinian diaspora, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the strategies of Arab states towards Islamist movements, political change in North Africa and regional security. Her last book to date is “Abattre les Murs” (Breaking the Walls) published in 2008.

From 1981 until 1998, she was the director and founder of from 1981 to 1998, she established and directed the Middle East Program at the Institut Francais des Relations Internationales (IFRI) in Paris as well as an Associate Professor in International Relations at Universite of Paris-1 Pantheon- Sorbonne and Universite Paris-Est Marne La-Vallee.

Bassma Kodmani attended her school, the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris where she received a Ph.D. qualification in the field of Political Science. From 2007 to 2009, she was a senior advisor on international cooperation to the French national research council and an associate researcher at the Centre d’études et de recherches internationales (CERI- Sciences Po) from 2006 to 2007.
