Bashir Yusuf Ibrahim is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 23, 1961 in Kano, Nigeria. Bashir Yusuf was born the 23rd of January of 1961. He was the son of Alhaji Yusuf Ibrahim and Hajjiya Khadija Usman. Both parents were from famous Islamic clergy families. His maternal uncle Sheikh Tijjani Usman who, along with Bashir was very close as a youngster was one of the most well-known scholars in West Africa until his death during a traffic accident in the year 1970. At first, the sixth child of six, Bashir became the first child of the family when his older brothers passed away to measles, a disease that struck cities like Kano in the 1960s. At the time that his father passed away in July of 1982, he was among the fourteen children his father had left to his children.

Bashir initially was a member of the UPN around 1978. He joined the UPN in 1979, and then after which Bashir joined the PRP along with the mentor of his, Aminu Kano. They joined in 1979. Bashir remained with the PRP until 1983, before becoming an official member of the Nigeria Peoples Party (NPP) in 1983. In 1989 he was a part of with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and was later able to lead his Ali Sa’ad Birnin Kudu governorship campaign in 1991. The candidate he chose won the election and was elected governor until January 1992, prior to when the general Sani Abacha coup of November 1993. He was a part of the Hope ’93 MKO Abiola Campaign Organisation in 1993. In 1993, the MKO Abiola campaign had a great success, but the victory was later canceled.

In 1979, in reaction to Aminu Kano’s disqualification from the presidential race by General Obasanjo’s military regime on the grounds of non payment of tax, Bashir and a childhood friend, Awwalu Anwar, organised a youth protest to challenge the disqualification. The protest, however, mutated into a citywide riot which lasted for several days. Later he was to become a Students Union activist and the first Deputy Senate President of National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS.

Bashir married his first wife in 1986, a few months before graduation, after meeting her a year earlier in the university. She succumbed to cancer after several years of treatment. His second marriage lasted four years. He has been happily married to his current wife since 1999. Bashir has seven children, with ages ranging from 26 years to 7 months old. His eldest child is an information security specialist at one of Nigeria’s largest financial institutions.

He was able to obtain the General Certificate of Education from the School of Preliminary Studies, Kano in the year 1978. The student also was an Interim Joint Matriculation Board, IJMB student at the same School of Preliminary Studies from 1979 until 1981 when he served as secretary-general and president for the union of students. He graduated in 1981 and completed Journalism classes at Graduate School, USDA in Washington DC and New York Institute of Technology following which he took an Interim Joint Matriculation Board Exam during the year 1982. His next endeavor in academics was at the highly regarded Bayero University, Kano, receiving the second-class upper grade from the departments of History as well as Political Science.

Bashir was raised in the normal African Muslim home in a polygamous family , with one of the wives being his first. The father of Bashir, Alhaji Yusuf Ibrahim, was a businessman with a varied career who traveled throughout Africa trading with precious metals and ivory and operated a transport company in the former Zaire and the present Democratic Republic of the Congo. Alhaji Yusuf Ibrahim was also an accomplished polyglot who learned to speak various African languages throughout his many extended business trips. He was among the African businessmen and foreigners who were exiled out of in the Congo in 1972 under the rule under the leadership of Mobutu Sese Seko.

Bashir first took up formal employment in 1978, when he was employed as a senior information assistant at the Kano State Ministry of Information. In 1981, he joined the Kano State Television Corporation where he trained as news producer. In 1982, he was appointed Personal Assistant to the governor at the Research Unit of Kano State Government House. He served in this position for a year and returned to school after his boss, governor Abubakar Rimi lost his reelection. After graduation from university in 1986 he spent his national service year as Teaching Assistant on Public Policy and Foreign Policy where he handled final year students at the Department of Political Science in his alma mater, Bayero University, Kano.
