Dempster was twice recognized as a finalist for his nomination for the Governor General’s Award for literature–for his debut book, Fables for Isolated Men (Guernica 1982) as well as for his book The Burning Alphabet (Brick Books 2005) and also for winning Canada’s Jack Chalmers Prize for Poetry. In both 2010 and 2015, the author was a finalist for his nomination for the Ontario Premier’s Award of Excellence in the Arts. 2013 was the year that Dempster received a nomination for the finalist award of his novel of the same name, The Outside World, (Pedlar Press 2013.) to be awarded the Ontario Trillium Award.
