Justice Lenk is a lesbian. She was married to her husband lawyer Debra Krupp in 2004, following the legalization of marriages between gay and lesbians within Massachusetts during 2004. There are two adoptive children. This is her first time as an openly gay judge of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. Justice Lenk was born in Queens, New York, to a family of poor. Her parents were bookbinders and housekeeper. The first language she spoke was Polish. She earned the degree of Bachelor of Arts magna cum laude from Fordham University in 1972, receiving a Doctor of Philosophy in political philosophy from Yale University in 1978, and an Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 1979. Following graduation she joined at the Boston legal firm Brown, Rudnick, Freed & Gesmer and served as an associate there over the course of six years. Her practice was focused on litigating civil matters, including a specialization on First Amendment issues.
