Growing in Waverley Hannigan emigrated to Toronto at 17 years old. She was a student in Toronto’s University of Toronto, where her instructors were notably Mary Morrison. The graduate of at the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1993, and an advanced master of Music degree in 1998. The school she continued to study at was the Banff Centre for the Arts and The Steans Institute for Young Artists at the Ravinia Festival, and the Centre d’arts Orford. She also completed a period at The Royal Conservatory of The Hague.

Hannigan is renowned for her performances in Gyorgy Ligeti’s Mysteries of the Macabre (a stage version of the scene from his opera Le Grand Macabre); in 2011, she was able to conduct the opera and sing the vocal portion. Her involvement in contemporary opera includes performing in the premieres of the Louis Andriessen’s Writing to Vermeer, Gerald Barry’s The Bitter Tears of Petra from Kant as well as The Importance of being Earnest and Jan van de Putte’s Wet Snow, Kris Defoort’s House of the Sleeping Beauties along with George Benjamin’s Written on Skin. She has collaborated together with choreographer Sasha Waltz on productions of Toshio Hosokawa’s Matsukaze and Pascal Dusapin’s Passion. Hannigan was praised by critics during her appearance as Lulu in Alban Berg’s Lulu that included performing on pointe. The year 2014 saw Hannigan played the character as Marie as Marie in Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s operetta Die Soldaten at the Bavarian State Opera, a production that was streamed live over the internet. In recognition of the role she played as Marie she was awarded her the prize of Der Faust (award) in Germany.

Hannigan’s life as an artist has been the subject of two documentaries: Accentus Music’s documentary I’m a creative animal, produced at Lucerne Festival 2014 where she was Artiste Etoile, Dutch television’s Canadees Podiumdier (NTR 2014), as well as Mathieu Amalric’s short film, C’est presque au bout du monde.
