Barbara Maria Karel Deckx (born 22 January 1974 in Turnhout) who is more well-known as the Stage descriptor Barbara Dex, is a Belgian singer who represented her country at the Eurovision Song Contest 1993 with the song “Iemand als jij”. Dex was a finalist in an audition at the Belgian national competition, Eurosong 93, held at the Casino Knokke on 6 March. In the Eurovision in Millstreet the singer performed in seventh place, following the entry of Greece “Ellada, Hora Tou Fotos” and before Malta’s entry “This Time”. Dex placed last, coming at 25th place.
Barbara made her return to her first Belgian final in the year 2004 working along with Alides in the track “One Life” which placed third. Another Eurovision attempt was made in 2006 when she performed the country line dancing flavor of “Crazy” which earned her fifth position.
Since 1997, the Barbara Dex Award is an annual fan award to honor the most poorly dressed contestant during the Eurovision Song Contest. From 1997 until 2016 it was given by the fan site House of Eurovision, and since 2017 it was awarded by songfestival.be.
