Abubakar was born in Banda Aceh, Indonesia on 21 June 1952. He earned a bachelor’s degree of architecture at the Bandung Institute of Technology, then a master’s degree of management at Syiah Kuala University in Aceh. Following graduation, he started working as an entrepreneur and consultant. Following an abrupt resignation by Suharto as President Suharto during 1998, the former president was politically active, founding his own branch of the National Mandate Party.
