In the year 2015, McFerran began her Field hockey program at University of Louisville. University of Louisville. From 2015 to 2017, she was recognized three times as an NFHCA All-American while playing for Louisville Cardinals. When she was within Louisville, Kentucky, McFerran was also the goalkeeper coach at an area field hockey club, IFHCK.

In August 2019, McFerran joined Dutch Hoofdklasse club SV Kampong.

McFerran was signed by Pegasus on September 14, 2014, after the plan of playing for UCD did not go through. McFerran then became a part of the Pegasus team that took home the women’s title in the Irish Hockey League. The team was named the league’s top goalie.

After playing field hockey at the age of seven, McFerran began representing Larne Grammar School as an eighth grader in the year 2008. McFerran was still a student in Larne Grammar School when she made her senior debut for Ireland.

McFerran made her debut as a senior player in the national team of Ireland in the match against Spain on the 11th of January, 2014, a day before the day she celebrated her birthday. In March of 2015, McFerran was part of the Ireland team that took home a 2014-15 women’s FIH Hockey World League Round 2 tournament held in Dublin beating Canada at the end of round 2 following the penalty shoot-out. McFerran is considered a specialist in shoot-outs she was replaced by Emma Gray specifically for the shoot-out. She then prevented three penalties. McFerran was also part of the Ireland team which took home the 2015 Women’s European Hockey Championship II, beating the Czech Republic 5-0 in the final. In the month of January, she was also part of the Ireland team that took home a 2017 Women’s FIH Hockey World League Round 2 tournament in Kuala Lumpur, defeating Malaysia with a score of 3-0 at the end of the round.

McFerran represented Ireland at the 2018 Women’s Hockey World Cup and was a prominent member of the team that won the silver medal. She featured in all of Ireland’s games throughout the tournament, including the pool games against the United States, India, and England, the quarter-final against India, the semi-final against Spain and the final against the Netherlands. Both the quarter-final against India and the semi-final against Spain were decided by penalty shoot-out and McFerran was instrumental in Ireland reaching the final. She saved three penalties against India and four against Spain. On the way to the final she conceded just three goals in five matches and she was subsequently named Goalkeeper of the Tournament.
