Ayat Al-Qurmezi is one of the most popular and richest Poet who was born on January 1, 1991 in Bahrain. In the day of the 29th March 2011 the riot police, accompanied by female police officers who had been given the order to arrest Ayat Al-Qurmezi snuck into the home of the family. After not finding her and unable to locate her, the police began to search the house according to reports, telling her mother they were planning to take Ayat “even if she is hidden in the depths of the earth”.
On Wednesday, February 23, 2011, during the early days of the Bahraini uprising (2011–present), Ayat Al-Qurmezi delivered a poem from the podium to the gathering of pro-democracy demonstrators at the Pearl Roundabout, that was critical of government policies and specifically those of Khalifa ibn Salman Al Khalifa, the prime minister of Bahrain.
The next day Ayat Al-Qurmezi was arrested after police raided her parents’ house a second time and forced four of Ayat’s brothers at gunpoint to lie on the floor. After one police officer shouted at their father “If you do not tell us where Ayat is in fifteen minutes, we will kill each of your sons in front of your eyes – I have orders to do so”. Ayat’s parents felt they had no choice but to ask her to return home.
After her arrest, Ayat Al-Qurmezi was held over nine days a small and very cold cell. She was convinced that, from time to time, the presence of a gas was circulated through the cell’s cooling system, making her feel like she was being suffocated. She was hit on the face with a cable and forced to wash lavatories using her naked hands. There are reports that suggested she was threatened with the threat of rape. In the course of this investigation, the police did not attempt to conduct any legitimate interrogation. On June 21, 2011 she made a television apology in front of the monarch as well as the prime minister.

On the 13th of July of 2011 Al-Qurmezi received her release from jail. The crowd was overwhelmingly supportive of her when she returned home to Sanad But her sentence hasn’t been annulled. In fact, (as as of October 11, 2011,) she was in house detention. The family is concerned that she could be sent back to prison in the future, as her sentence hasn’t been removed – she hasn’t received an official pardon nor has her conviction was not overturned in appeal.
After two months in prison, she was tried by an in-house security court. no legal arguments were considered as her attorney was also not permitted to speak in front of the court. On June 12, 2011, Al-Qurmezi was found guilty and sentenced to one-year prison. The ruling of the court was condemned by opposition groups as well as Amnesty International, who said the verdict demonstrated how freedom of freedom of speech has been “brutally denied” by Bahrain’s authorities.
On March 6, 2011, she read out another poem to the crowd at Pearl Roundabout which criticized King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. One verse included the lines: “We are the people who will kill humiliation and assassinate misery. Don’t you hear their cries? Don’t you hear their screams?” Another verse imagined a dialogue between the Devil and the King in which the Devil, Hamad’s “best and most courageous pupil”, says: “Hamad, your people have shaken me. Don’t you hear their cries?”
