Ayako Okamoto is one of the most popular and richest Golfer who was born on April 2, 1951 in Akitsu, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. Ayako Okamoto (Gang Ben Ling Zi , Okamoto Ayako born the 2nd of April, 1951) is a Japanese professional golfer. She has won 62 international tournaments which included 17 in the U.S.-based LPGA Tour. She is a part of the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Okamoto’s final LPGA victory came in 1992. 1993 was her final year in which she played either a full or half-time program during her time in America. U.S. Okamoto returned to Japan in 1993, and she continued to play until 2005. Along with her 17 LPGA victories, Okamoto also won 44 times on the LPGA of Japan Tour, and twice on the Ladies European Tour. She was elected for the World Golf Hall of Fame through the International ballot into the hall in 2005.

The only thing that Okamoto didn’t do during her time in Japan or the United States was win a major. She finished second at six major championships. Her most memorable moments occurred during 1986 when she was eliminated in an 18-hole sudden death match against Pat Bradley at the du Maurier Classic and in 1987, she lost an 18-hole match to Laura Davies for the U.S. Women’s Open title (JoAnne Carner, who was playing in the playoff). She was ranked in the top 10 of the Open every year from 1983 until 1987, and also in the top 10 in the LPGA Championship every year from 1984 until 1991.

Okamoto is a native of Akitsu, Hiroshima, now part of Higashihiroshima, Hiroshima, Japan. In her in her early 20s, she played softball. She was the top pitcher for the Japanese national team in 1971. Her club team was run by the textile business Daiwabo in which Okamoto was employed. Daiwabo owned a golf course right adjacent to the one next door. When she turned 22, Okamoto decided to begin playing. While she played left-handed, she began learning the game right-handed. She was a part of in the LPGA of Japan Tour in 1973. Within three years at the age of 25, she took home in the Mizuno Corporation Tournament. The year 1979 (at the age of 28) Okamoto took home her first Japan LPGA Championship, and in 1981, she won 8 times throughout Japan and also topped her place on the LPGA of Japan money list.

Okamoto was a cult figure in Japan However, she decided to expand her horizons and join the American LPGA Tour in 1981. From 1982 until in 1992 Okamoto was a 17-time winner in her debut win in the 1982 Arizona Copper Classic. Okamoto was a regular winning player at the LPGA Tour, claiming four wins in 1987 (plus four runners-up and 17 top 10s) along with three wins between 1984 and 1988. She won in 1987 and was on the money list of the tour and was awarded an LPGA Tour Player of the Award, becoming the first non-American to earn it also.
