Troost was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) from 1970 to 1973 and a member of the German Communist Party (DKP) from 1976 to 1984. He later co-founded the Electoral Alternative for Labour and Social Justice (WASG) and served as a member of its federal executive committee from 2005 to

2007. Troost has been a member of the federal executive committee of the Left Party since the Left Party.PDS merged with the WASG. He has been deputy chairman of the Left Party since 3 June 2012.

Troost is a member on the committee that oversees the Institute of Modern Solidarity (ISM) since 2010 and is one of the five spokespersons for ISM since 2014. He is a long-time member of Attac as well as The German Federation of Democratic Scientists (BdWi). After several years of membership of the IG Metall trade union, Troost joined the United Services Union (ver.di) in 2009.

In the 17th term of the electoral cycle, Troost was one of the Parliamentary Secretaries as well as an active participant in the Finance Committee and the Subcommittee on Local Government Affairs. Troost ran as a presidential direct candidate in the election for the Leipzig-Land region and was elected to the Bundestag through the party list for Saxony (on fourth place) in 2013. Troost continued to be the spokesman for financial policy in the 18th election term and also served as spokesperson of the Bundestag group composed of Left Party parliamentarians from Saxony. Troost is also an administration Council and the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin).
