Demirgüç-Kunt began her higher education at Robert College, earning her Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1983. In 1985, she continued her education at The Ohio State University, where she achieved a master’s degree, and in 1990 she obtained her Ph.D. in economics.
Demirgüç-Kunt’s career began at The Ohio State University, where she functioned as an instructor in the departments of economics and mathematics, until 1988. She began at The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, OH, as a visiting economist, from 1988 until 1989. After completing her role as a visiting economist, Demirgüç-Kunt started her career at The World Bank in Washington, DC as the lead economist in the area of development economics. She was promoted in 2003 to become the finance research manager for development economics and serves as the advisor on the financial sector operations and policy. Now she serves as the director of research at The World Bank. . She also created the Global Financial Development Report for the World Bank.
