He has also served as Director for Particle Physics at the University. In addition, Kotwal was in charge of the Higgs boson research team in the context of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, with the goal of proving the presence of the Higgs boson particle. Kotwal made up the CERN team that first announced the discovery the Higgs boson in the year 2012. Kotwal conducts research on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and Fermilab, which is located in Chicago. In the course of his research, Kotwal presently coordinates U.S. scientists in the worldwide efforts to construct a brand new collider that is seven times the energy of the LHC and has also collaborated with Chinese and European groups to achieve this goal.
