Vailas became the president of Idaho State University July 1 in 2006. He helped establish the Center for Advanced Energy Studies in collaboration between the Idaho National Laboratories and other Idaho universities in 2007. In 2011, Vailas created the Career Path Internship (CPI), a $1.4 million program which provides students with the opportunity to apply for work in paid campus positions that match their academic and career interests. Arthur Vailas received his Ph.D. in Physical Education at the University of Iowa in 1979 and he specialized in the physiology of exercise and connective tissue.

After completing a 3-year National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellowship in biochemistry and orthopedic surgery in the University of Iowa College of Medicine and Biochemistry, he was accepted onto the faculty at UCLA, the University of California, Los Angeles. In his position as an associate professor within the Department of Physiological Science at UCLA his research was particularly on the physiology of connective tissues. Vailas became an associate professor at the age of 1988. He moved into the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he was director for the Biomechanics Laboratory. He was later promoted to professor and appointed joint surgeon professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s College of Life and Agricultural Sciences. He was the chair for the Department of Physical Education and was later appointed the Associate Dean of Research and Development of the College of Education. In 1992 and 1995 the professor was awarded Outstanding Science Achievement Awards from NASA for his work in NASA’s U.S.-Russian Space program.
