Grunberg was born Arnon Yasha Yves Grunberg on February 22, 1971 in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. He was raised in the home consisting of Jewish immigrants initially from Germany. His mother was a survivor from concentration camps Auschwitz. Grunberg was a student at in the Vossius Gymnasium in Amsterdam, however, he was exiled in 1988. Prior to publishing his debut novel, he had a number of odd jobs. He also attempted to act in a short film made by Dutch avant-garde filmmaker Cyrus Frisch. Between 1990 and 1993 Grunberg owned his own publishing company Kasimir which was not financially successful.

Grunberg is also well-known for his journalistic writing and for his periods of total immersion into various areas of the society. He has stayed with and wrote about masseurs in an Romanian retreat, individuals at the Belgian hospital for psychiatric patients as well as waiters in dining cars on an Swiss train and a normal Dutch family enjoying a holiday. He also has been embedded with Dutch soldiers throughout Afghanistan and Iraq as well as traveled to Guantanamo Bay. In 2009 , his accounts have been published in a publication titled Chambermaids and Soldiers.

In an attempt to understand the creative process, Grunberg wrote his latest novel Het Bestand (which can mean both computer file and truce) while scientists were measuring his brain activity, emotions, and subjective feelings. Using screen capture and physiological measurements such as EEG, GSR and ECG, and subjective questionnaires for the author, scientists correlated the writing of emotionally charged passages with physiological activity. The second phase of the experiment will take place in October and November 2015 in the GrunbergLab at the University of Amsterdam, where volunteers’ brain activity will be measured while they are reading the novel under controlled circumstances.

The month of September was the year that Grunberg wrote his seventh book, Onze Oom (Our Uncle). The book’s launch took place in Belgian Eupen due to another incident that occurred at ECI Literatuurprijs with A. F. Th. van der Heijden led to the author take a decision not to more appear in public events within the Netherlands. The following time, Grunberg was invited to be a guest lecturer and writer at Leiden University and Wageningen University and Research Centre. Then, in October of 2014, he was made an honorary fellow in the Faculty of Arts of the University of Amsterdam. The topics of his lectures center around issues of privacy and surveillance , and along with the students, creates a game for video. The lecture series is paired with an exhibition on the life and work of the writer and the material originate from his personal (literary) archive that can be found “on lease” at the department of special collections at the university library which makes it an exclusive living archive.
