Aref Karim is one of the most popular and richest Executive who was born on February 7, 1953 in Bangladesh. Karim’s father was in the civil service. Later, the British government stepped up and was a top officer in the administration of Bengal in British rule up to 1947.
After working in public practice as the senior audit manager for a number of several years, within London, Karim joined the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) as the financial manager under an agreement for two years. Two years became four which then turned into six, and finally 12 and then he moved into an investment management position. While working in ADIA in the role of Senior Investment Manager, he was responsible for looking for the policies of investment as well as asset allocation for an enormous billion-dollar Alternative Investment Portfolio. The institution was in his employ from March 1982 to May 1995, before returning in the UK.
In September 1995, Karim moved from the buying (allocation) to selling (fund management), and in December 1995 founded his own hedge fund Quality Capital Management (QCM) based in Weybridge, Surrey. He relocated to Weybridge, partly so his children would be educated there. He is the board member, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer, carrying responsibility for the firm’s investment strategies and research. In the years since, QCM has returned more than 600 per cent growth to its investors, with only two negative years. It has assets in the region of £150 million according to the Sunday Times Rich List. In 2008, the hedge fund made £42.9m profit on £49.3m sales, returning 59 per cent.
In January 2015, Karim was nominated for Businessman of the Year award at the British Muslim Awards.
Karim was a resident of London and was offered a position for an articled assistant. The year 1978 was the time he became qualified as an accountant chartered.
