Arahmaiani is one of the most popular and richest Performance Artist who was born on May 21, 1961 in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Arahmaiani was born in Bandung, Indonesia on May 21 1961. His father is an Islamic scholar, while her mother was of Javanese Hindu-Buddhist extraction. Her name is a symbol of the blend of two distinct cultures she was exposed to during her early years. As she explains “Arahma” goes back to the Arabic word which means “loving” while “iani/yani” originates from the Hindi word that means “human being”.
The painting, Lingga-Yoni 1993, and her installation titled Etalase 1994, unite diverse symbols of Islam, Western culture, and sexuality. Etalase comprised of items like the Quran as well as the Quran, a Buddha statue and a mirror, as well as a box of condoms as well as an empty Coca-Cola bottle container of soil along with a fan, tiny tambourine (traditional tambourine) and her photograph put inside the museum’s vitrine display case. Both works provoked a resounding response from members of an Muslim fundamentalist group at the time of their initial display at Jakarta, Indonesia in 1994. The paintings were quickly censored and Arahmaiani herself was subject to death threats that eventually forced her to move and move to Australia temporarily. Due to the poor state of the original painting, Arahmaiani produced a new rendition of her painting to be used in the exhibit in the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art in 2013.
She has participated in several art biennale such as: 50th Venice Biennale, Italy in 2003; Biennale of the Moving Image, Geneva in 2003; Gwangju Biennale, South Korea in 2002; Bienal de São Paulo, Brazil in 2002; Performance Biennale, Israel in 2001; Biennale de Lyon, France in 2000; Werkleitz Biennale, Germany in 2000; Havana Biennale, Cuba in 1997; Asia-Pacific Triennial, Brisbane, Australia in 1996; Yogyakarta Biennale, Indonesia in 1994.Additionally, she has held international performances in Australia, Brazil, Cuba, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Spain, Sweden, and the U.S.A.
Arahmaiani exhibited in the Indonesian pavilion at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003, along with other prominent Indonesian artists, Dadang Christianto, Tisna Sanjaya and Made Wianta. The presentation was titled Paradise Lost: Mourning of the World.
Arahmaiani was a student at in the Faculty of Fine Art and Design, Bandung Institute of Technology and graduated in the year 1992. She also attended the Academie voor Beeldende Kunst, Enschede, the Netherlands in 1983, and the Paddington Art School, Sydney, Australia in 1985.

Arahmaiani (Arahmayani Feisal born on May 21 1961) is an Indonesian artist who was born in Bandung and is based within Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. Arahmaiani is widely regarded as an artist who is revered and well-known contemporary artists, particularly in performing art that is a pioneer across Southeast Asia. Arahmaiani is often using art as a way to express critique of religious, social, and cultural issues.
While she is best known for her performance art she also works with drawing, painting poetry, sculpture, video as well as dance and installation. The theme of Arahmaiani’s works address particular issues associated with the violence and discrimination towards women and the exploitation of women’s bodies and bodies by men as well as the role of religion in modern world, Western commercial imperialism, and the globalization of industrialization. In the beginning of the 1980s, the work of Arahmaiani has caused hostility on the part of Islamic community leaders as well as political authorities, resulting in her brief prison sentence in 1983.
