Anurag Sharma was born on May 7, 1955, completed his graduate study at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IITD) from which the graduate earned master’s degrees in the fields of science (MSc) and in engineering (MTech) and was accepted as a faculty member in 1978. He also pursued doctoral studies at the institute under the direction under the direction of Ajoy Ghatak. After earning the PhD within a year and he continued to work at IITD however, he took two sabbaticals. The first was at the Technical University of Karlsruhe as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow during 1982-83, for post-doctoral studies and a brief time as an visiting researcher for CSELT, Turin in 1988. At IITD the institution, he was Director of Students (2006-2009) in addition to Dean of Academics (2012-2016) and was in the post of professor in the department of Physics since 1995. He has carried out the first-ever research into optoelectronics as well as optical communications. He is also recognized for the creation of numerical and analytical methods that can be used to analyze dielectric optical waves one-mode fibers Graded-Index (GRIN) gadgets and an the optical imaging systems. He devised a method to trace GRIN media to be used in imaging systems and to characterize inhomogeneous media. He is continuing his studies regarding the propagation of electromagnetic waves within dielectric media. The researcher has documented his research in a variety of articles. Guided Wave Optics: Selected Topics Understanding Fiber Optics on a computer, International Conference on Fiber Optics and Photonics Selected papers from Photonics India 1998 (Proceedings of SPIE), Photonics 2010: Tenth International Conference on Fiber Optics and Photonics (Proceedings of SPIE). and Frontiers in Photonics and Optics 2011.

Sharma is an active part of the Optical Society of India, was vice-president of the organization in 2008-2012 and is the founding director of its general office of the Delhi chapter of the Optical Society of America. He is a member of the committee of experts on physical sciences for the Fund for Improvement of S&T Infrastructure in Universities and other Higher Educational Institutions (FIST) Program of the Department of Science and Technology The group is also affiliated in the Vidya Knowledge Park. It is an educational venture located on India’s National Capital Region of India as an advisory council. He is also a part of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Indian Institute of Technology, Patna. In addition to advising a variety of students during their doctoral studies, he’s given a number of invited or keynote speeches that include the International Conference on Fiber Optics and Photonics 2000, South Asian Workshop on Optics & Photonics, “SAWOP-2015”, and the Workshop on Fiber Optics and Optical Communications (FOCo-2016). In terms of academics He participated in redesigning of the academic curriculum for undergraduate students in IIT Delhi and it was during his tenure as Dean of Academics that the institute began to offer alumni involvement in the institute’s affairs.

Sharma was appointed an associate of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in 1988 for a year and also for to be awarded the Homi Bhabha Fellowship from the Homi Bhabha Fellowship Council in the year 1990, the duration of the fellowship running until 1992. Sharma was elected a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India appointed him fellow in 1998, and Abdus Salam Centre granted his the senior associate-ship for 2001-2008. He was elected a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences in 2002, and the Indian National Science Academy followed with the same in 2004. In the same year was also the year that The Optical Society of India also named him an honorary fellow, which was followed by the Indian National Academy of Engineering in 2009. Additionally, he is a Fellow in the Institution of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineers.
