Antonio Ereditato (Napoli, 2 June 1955) is an Italian scientist and Professor in the University of Bern, Switzerland and director of the Laboratory for High Energy Physics. He conducted research in the area of experimental neutrino physics of weak interactions as well as strong interactions through experiments carried out at CERN in Japan as well as at Fermilab in the United States and at the LNGS in Italy. Ereditato has carried out several research studies in R&D in particle detectors. These include wire chambers, calorimeters times projection chambers, nuclei emulsions detectors for medical use.
Antonio Ereditato is very active in scientific disclosure. In particular, he has written for general public: Le Particelle Elementari, Il Saggiatore (2017) — English version, Ever Smaller, MIT Press (2020) — and Guida Turistica per Esploratori dello Spazio, Il Saggiatore (2019); together with Edoardo Boncinelli: Il Cosmo della Mente, il Saggiatore (2018) — also published in Spain: El cosmo de la Mente, Tusquets (2020) and in Portugal: O Cosmo da Mente, Presenca (2019) — and L’Infinito Gioco della Scienza, Il Saggiatore (2020). For his work In 2017, he was awarded the Caccuri Prize for Literature and Science and the Maria Antonia Gervasio Prize.
As the head of the ATLAS Bern group, Ereditato was a key contributor to finding the Higgs Boson in 2012. Within the context of the T2K experiment in Japan In 2013, Ereditato was involved in the study of the existence of neutrino oscillations. Alongside the OPERA collaboration, he was able to share the discovery of the tau-neutrino-like appearance. Thanks to these results, Ereditato was among the winners from the 2016 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. He is currently working on the USA neutrino program, in particular in his involvement in the MicroBooNE as well as the SBND research at Fermilab focused on the search for neutrinos that are sterile. Ereditato is one of the pioneers of the DUNE experiment that aims to provide high-precision investigation of neutrino oscillations, as well as the astroparticle physics. Ereditato’s lab is involved in the development of Near Detector of the experiment using the ArgonCube liquid time projection chamber made of argon.

Ereditato earned a degree in Physics (1981) and a PhD (1987) in physics at the University of Naples Federico II. He was employed by CNRS Strasbourg as well as at CERN and CERN and at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare in Napoli which is where he has been awarded the post as Director of Research in 1998. On May 31, 2010, Ereditato announced the discovery of the very first tau-neutrino discovered by OPERA. This was the first sign of the directly observed existence in neutrino oscillations. In September of 2011, The OPERA Collaboration announced that an anomaly was discovered in the measurement of neutrino’s velocity. This suggests the possibility of muon neutrinos that are superluminal. The cause of the anomaly was identified by OPERA researchers to be due to an instrumental issue.
On 2 June 2018, Ereditato has been awarded the title of Ufficiale al Merito della Repubblica Italiana.
