Antonia Bird is one of the most popular and richest Film Director who was born on May 27, 1951 in London, United Kingdom. Antonia Jane Bird, FRSA (27 May 1951 – 24 October 2013) was an English producer and director of dramas on television and feature films.

She created feature films for Sony, Columbia, Warner Brothers, Fine Line and several American private companies. She went back to London for the shooting of Face (UIP/New Line, 1997) which was a gangster movie. Then she returned to her home in the U.S. to develop the dark horror satire Ravenous which starred Guy Pearce, Robert Carlyle and David Arquette (20th Century Fox 1999).

In 2005, she produced Faith, a 4Way Pictures/Company Pictures production about the 1984–85 national miners’ strike. She was an executive producer of the 2009 Iraqi film Son of Babylon.

In 2010, she and Kay Mellor realised their story about Mellor’s mother in A Passionate Woman (BBC 2010), which the duo directed.

The creators of a brand new BBC program, Casualty (1986) recruited her to serve as one of the show’s first directors. She then directed an adaptation in six parts of the novel by Ann Oakley, The Men’s Room (BBC 1991). The next project she directed was a feature-length adaptation from A Masculine Ending (1992) and The Safe (BBC 1993) which was a tale inspired by the lives of of homeless youngsters living in the London’s West End was awarded the Best Single Drama TV BAFTA. The film also earned an award from the British Academy Award and a collection of festival prizes, which included an award from the Edinburgh International Film Festival First Film Award and the Best British Film at the Dinard Film Festival. The film helped bring Bird to the attention of the world at large however it was overshadowed by the popularity that was Priest (BBC/Miramax 1994) that she directed shortly after Safe.

In 1968 at the age 17 Bird started working in the the theatre industry as an assistant stage director at Coventry Rep. She worked her way to many different roles, including stage management, acting, advertising, administration of theatre as well as directing in regional and repertory theatres. She directed a series of shows at The Studio at Chester Theatre and then became a part of The Phoenix Theatre in Leicester. Bird was appointed Resident Director of the Royal Court Theatre in 1978. She was then appointed Arts Director at the Royal Court’s Theatre Upstairs, London’s leading theater for the development of new writing. Her first TV show is Submariners (1983) which was which was a re-creation of one of the Royal Court productions which she directed for the BBC. She was approached by the original creators and producers for EastEnders, Julia Smith and Tony Holland, to direct the show in 1985. she directed 17 episodes, including the show’s initial two-hander. It was the first time that two actors were in the same show character Den Watts (Leslie Grantham) and Angie Watts (Anita Dobson).

Bird’s film Care, broadcast in 2000, dealt with sexual abuse in a children’s home, won the Best Single Drama TV BAFTA. She received a BAFTA Children’s Award for the 2009 BBC documentary Off By Heart, about a national poetry competition for schoolchildren.
