Folkers started his studies as a student of Art as well as Art History through John Carroll University, Cleveland United States and Utrecht University in 1979. Folkers was then able to pursue studies in urban and architectural design within TU Delft. While studying at the university Folkers employed as a trainee in the office of German designer Georg Lippsmeier – founder and owner of L+P architects as well as the Institute for Tropical Building. A pivotal moment in his career as an urban planner and architect was his time as a trainee in 1984-1985 with the Direction Generale de l’Urbanisme et de la Topographie in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso where Folkers participated, among others in the Wagadogo Nossin District Redevelopment and Re-settlement Project under the direction of Dutch Urban Planner Coen Beeker. After finishing his studies at TU Delft, Folkers went to work for the L+P architects office in 1987 in Dar es Salaam, a city that became his home for the next 25 years. In the year 1991, Folkers began a partnership in architecture along with Belinda van Buiten named as FBW following Geoff Wilks. British structural engineer Geoff Wilks joined the partnership in 1993. The firm was split by 2000 in FBW Group with its HQ in Uganda and Manchester and FBW Architects in the Netherlands. From 1994 until 2014, Folkers worked closely with a group of architects comprised of Belinda van Buiten, Thierry van Baggem, and Saskia Van Haren. Folkers is still working in the Netherlands alongside van Buiten as FBW Architects and also as an individual architect, consultant and architect in Africa.
Folkers’ thoughts about architecture and building in Africa were published in the book Modern Architecture in Africa. The book provides a description of Folkers personal experiences from his Africa as an urban planner and architect. It offers an overview, analysis and comparison of several projects, which are placed within the larger context of the development of African architecture.
Between 2006 and 2010 Folkers was part of the research and conservation work regarding the Mtoni Palace located on the western shores of Unguja Island (Zanzibar) which led to publishing Mtoni. Palace. Sultan & Princes of Zanzibar. His study of Zanzibar has also been focused with the architectural and urban development of Karume’s Revolutionary Government. Antoni Scholtens Folkers (born 1960) is a Dutch architect urbanist, researcher and architect. Folkers was a student at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning at Delft University of Technology where he also obtained the Ph.D. in the year 2011. His dissertation was published later as the publication Modern Architecture in Africa. Folkers is among the original partners of the research and education platform ArchiAfrika as well as African Architecture Matters.
In 2001, Folkers formed along with Berend van Langs, Belinda van Buiten, Janneke Bierman, and Joep Mol the non-profit organization ArchiAfrika. The main objective of the organization was to make Africa the chance to be more prominent in the discussion about architecture. The initial activities of the NGO concentrated on research on contemporary architectural styles within Africa.Together with ArchiAfrika He initiated conferences during the between 2005 and 2009 that were referred to under the alias African Perspectives. Other noteworthy ArchiAfrika projects include the documentary focusing on The Tanzanian designer Anthony Almeida Many Words for Modern: Survey of Modern Architecture in Tanzania and Stars of Dar. After 10 years of operation the organization was transferred to an entirely new Africa team based in Ghana under the leadership by Joe Addo and has henceforth continued to operate out of Ghana. In 2010, Folkers and van der Lans founded AAM, the NGO African Architecture Matters (AAM).
Folkers’ work in the Netherlands focuses primarily on projects of socio- cultural nature and health care. Notable projects realized in the Netherlands are visitor centres in nature reserves, temporary shelter for homeless people Omnizorg in Apeldoorn and the restoration of Jongerius Villa in Utrecht. In Africa, Folkers’ works on projects primarily in Tanzania, Uganda, and Zanzibar. Notable architectural and urban projects are the Msasani Slipway complex in Dar es Salaam, Michenzani Green Corridors Plan and Mtoni Palace conservation project in Zanzibar.
