Antigoni Papadopoulou is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on July 8, 1954 in Güzelyurt, Aksaray Province, Turkey. Antigoni Papadopoulou (Greek: Antigone Papadopoulou; she is also known as Pericleous (Greek Perikleous) born on July 8th in 1954) is an Greek Cypriot politician as well as a chemical engineer. She was among the two Cypriot women elected Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) among six Cypriot MEPs (2009). She was a former Member of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus and the first woman to be elected in the Chair position of the House’s Committee of Economic Affairs and Budgeting (2006-2009). The Assembly member was part in the Council of Europe from 2001 until 2009, and also been vice chairperson for the Committee of Economic Affairs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (2003-2009).
During her undergraduate studies, she worked working as an assistant professor the Department of Chemistry at Russell Sage College, Troy, New York. There were also other work during the summer holiday. Following the completion of the course in Chemistry She worked for nearly a year with Francoudi & Stephanou Shipping Company (Limassol) as a Management Trainee as well as attending at the same as the MIM post-graduate Management Program. Then she was employed for a full year as an Quality Control Manager at Vitatrace Nutrition, a local firm that produces premixes to be used in animal feedstuffs. The next time she worked was at the Cyprus Carlsberg Brewery, as the Quality Control Manager in which she enjoyed a successful career that lasted for nearly 22 year (1978-2001). In this position, she was in charge of running the Quality Control Department and carrying the microbiological, chemical and packaging lab control of the raw materials, semi-finished and finished products from the Brewery and also fruits juices, table water and other products made in the Brewery’s production.
In the municipality elections of December 1991, Papadopoulou successfully contested a seat as Councilor for the Municipality of Strovolos, where she lives, after becoming a refugee in 1974. As a Municipality Councilor she held the Chair of the Committee for the Environment and was actively involved in the Committee of Social Protection, working with relevant NGO’s on social issues/programs (1991–1996).
In December 1996, in the municipal elections, Papadopoulou ran for Mayor of Morphou. She was elected as the first female mayor in the city’s political history, defeating her opponent Andreas Shittis. She received 84% of the popular vote, as a common candidate of an alliance of four political parties. As mayor, she worked very hard on enlightenment campaigns on the Cyprus issue abroad and for the inalienable right of the refugees of Morphou to return to their occupied home-town. She also worked very hard for twinning Morphou with the towns of Żurrieq (Malta), Saint Syr Sur Loire (France) and Nea Orestiada (Greece); for editing and publishing the monthly Municipal magazine “Voice of Morphou and the occupied villages of the Morphou area” ; for publishing the book “Morphou-3600 years of History”; for housing the Municipality’s offices in the “House of Morphou” (Zenonos street 16, Nicosia) and for organizing an annual festival in commemoration of the annual orange festival held in Morphou, before 1974. As mayor, Papadopoulou was appointed as representative of the Cyprus Union of Municipalities in the Committee on Youth of the Council of Europe (1996–2001);
In 1978, she was an associate of GODIK and was also a the regional and branch branches for Nicosia and in the occupied Morphou. In 1994, she successfully contested the position of leader of GODIK and was elected to the post which she still holds to this day. In addition, she has been a member of both the Democrats’ Central Committee and the Executive Bureau since 1994. She was also the Vice-President of DIKO and was also the Coordinator of the Party’s Political Research Groups (1998-2000).

Papadopoulou is born in Morphou. Her brothers are younger, Peter and Xenios. Their father Andreas Pericleous, and her mother, Georgia Pericleous (nee Thrasivoulou) come in Petra, Kythrea, and Voni villages, which have all been taken over by Turkish Cypriot forces since 1974 As is Morphou.
Papadopoulou earned her bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Lancaster University in 1977. She then entered the postgraduate management diploma program of the Mediterranean Institute of Management (1977-1978) and earned the certificate with distinction. In 1993, as she pursued an academic career in chemistry she was accepted into the entrance exams to an admission to the University of Athens to study Greek literature. She also attended the required classes for two years. In the last few years (2007-2009) she completed an advanced course of study in the University of the Aegean (Greece) and was a specialist in Gender studies. She speaks fluently in Greek as well as English.
In September 1979, Papadopoulou married economist Dr. Stelios Papadopoulos, and later gave birth to two sons, Charis (age 38) and Andreas (age 36).
