He played in the NCAA basketball tournament on the campus of Texas A&M University.
Prior to signing with as a member of the Aggies in the 2005-2006 season Kavaliauskas was a summer player in Lithuania’s Lithuanian senior national side. He was the captain of the team to a silver medal in the FIBA Under-21 World Championship in Argentina and scored nine points and five rebounds in a tight 65-63 win against Greece in the final game. He also took part as a player in his part in the Lithuanian Junior National Team’s bronze medal performance in the Global Games in Dallas, Texas and the only loss they suffered was against Team USA. In the bronze-medal game, Kavaliauskas scored 22 points and had seven rebound.
In 2007, Kavaliauskas started his pro career in Greece, playing there for two seasons. In 2009, he moved to Italy where he played next two seasons.
On Selection Sunday, however, the Aggies were rewarded for their regular- season play with a Number 3 seed in the South region of the 2007 NCAA Tournament. The Aggies won their first-round game against Penn to advance to the second round of the tournament. The team’s 72–69 victory over Louisville earned them a berth in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1980.

With their record improving throughout the second part of the season the Aggies were able to participate in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1987. In the tournament, Kavaliauskas was averaging 10.5 points as well as 4.0 rebound. After the divorce of his parents when the age of eleven, Kavaliauskas lived with his grandmother, mother, along with his sister Egle in a tiny apartment in Vilnius. His mother was a athlete in volleyball who worked for years being a hairdresser, before taking care of her family through an occupation as security guard. When Lithuania declared independent from Soviet Union in 1991, Birute Kavaliauskiene snatched her son away for a few weeks to guard him from Soviet forces that were occupying the city. When the situation was less dangerous, Antanas returned home, but he recalled having to face Soviet troops for a few more months until they left the country.
Shortly after beginning play in the 2006–2007 season, the Aggies reached Number 6 in the rankings, the highest rank the school had ever achieved. The team had their best start since opening 16–2 in the 1959–1960 season, as well as their best conference opening since the inception of the Big 12.

Texas A&M discovered that the NCAA-financed Student-Athlete Opportunity Fund could be used, and paid for Birute Kavaliauskiene to travel to the US for the first time to see her son play in his last home game for A&M. In the Aggies’ 94–78 win over Missouri, Kavaliauskas, whose mother traveled all the way from Lithuania to see him play, scored a career-high 26 points on 11-of-12 shooting. The win assured the Aggies of a second-place finish in the Big 12 regular season, the highest the team has ever finished in this conference.
